■ From bnd.com:
The Edwardsville Tigers did more than nail down another Southwestern Conference baseball championship Monday with an 8-1 victory over Belleville East.
They also broke the school home run record when first baseman Tim Messer blasted a three-run homer in the seventh inning.
It was the 43rd home run this season for the top-ranked Tigers (29-2), now 12-1 in SWC play. That's one better than coach Tim Funkhouser's first Edwardsville team hit in 1999 and according to Illinois High School Association records, the most by a metro-east team.
Senior outfielder and Missouri recruit Dane Opel leads the way with 15, followed by Messer with six and Michael Failoni and Ian Sikes with five each. Two more RBIs Monday pushed Opel's season total to 54, while Failoni has 55.
