Mizzou Baseball: Jersey Numbers

Ian Kinsler (22) & Tony Vitello (24) at 2003 Big 12 Tournament

When Nolan Gromacki, he of the hand-warming flaming red hair, first stepped on to the mound at Simmons Field, he reminded me of Phil McCormick, whom I had watched many times on that same mound. The two of them don't look anything alike, and their pitching styles are certainly not similar (McCormick transformed himself into a sidewinder and resuscitated his career). No, what they had in common was the number on their jerseys, #27. Both of them wore the number well and served the Missouri Tigers with distinction.

Now Kam Durnin is wearing #27. He's not likely to see time on the pitching mound, but I expect he'll make a name for himself as a Tiger wearing that number.

Only someone who has been around Mizzou Baseball as long as I have (or longer) would make a connection like that, and probably even many long-time fans don't remember uniform numbers.

Being a Mizzou Baseball History nut, I've been doing some research into historical jersey numbers.

Here's my list as it stands so far. The list goes back through most of the Tim Jamieson years, plus a few odds and ends of numbers and names I've managed to rummage up from earlier years.

If anyone has resources with other earlier rosters with numbers, I'd be delighted to include them. Or if you find an error, let me know. Contact me at simmonsfield@hotmail.com.

Players who were drafted or spent time in the affiliated minor leagues are in BOLD. Players who made it to the Major Leagues are in BLUE. Players/Coaches with Retired Numbers are in RED.

Tigers playing with Joplin on mind (Columbia Tribune, 5/28/2011)

Hanging in Missouri's home dugout is a No. 21 jersey from the 2002-03 era that was discovered among the rubble in Joplin.

A photo was posted online, and catcher Ben Turner sent a text message to his father, Mark, who had driven into St. Louis on Friday to watch his younger son play a high school game. Mark Turner stopped in Joplin between 11 p.m. and midnight on the drive back to Oklahoma City to pick up the tattered jersey.

That was the only piece of property former KOMU reporter Brandon Spiegel, now working in Joplin, could find in the remains, miles away from his home.

“He goes, 'Take it and put it in their dugout,'” Mark Turner said. “ 'It kind of represents what you guys have done this year between the first half and the second half of the season.'”
The jersey design is from '00-'03, from the James Boone era. Kelly Fick, who wore #21 in 2011, pitched the game of his career in Game #4 of the Big 12 Tournament to send the Tigers in the championship game, while the Joplin jersey hung in the dugout.

HI NOTES: Roster Cuts, More SEC Dominance, More Jersey #s, More Preseason Season

ROSTER

At Saturday's First Pitch Celebration, 38 players were introduced.  The roster on mutigers.com now lists 35,  the mandated limit for roster size.  Missing from the list are Senior LHP Kyle Barbeck, Sophomore LHP Tyler House, and Junior RHP Jeff Oracion.  Here's a SimmonsField.com Tip of the Cap to those three Tigers, for all the effort they've put in.  There may be a Jake Walsh in that group.

SOUTHERN EXPOSURE

The SEC "Numbers Game": The Beginning (SECDigitalNetwork.com)
The SEC is pretty good in football, right?

Anyone familiar with the SEC has heard the laundry list of achievements experienced in football. Seven straight National Championships, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and unmatched depth. Many argue that this year was the SEC's most dominant, with at one point six of the top nine teams in the Bowl Championship Series standings coming from this conference.

Consider this though. Is the SEC just as dominant in baseball?

SEC baseball teams have won nine of the last 22 national championships, having finished runner-up six times during that span. That includes South Carolina in 2012, which fell two wins short of winning their third straight title. Although LSU and the Gamecocks have won eight of those championships, this isn't a case of two teams dominating while the rest coast on that reputation...
Realignment Shuffles Plenty Of Conferences (Baseball America)
BOTTOM LINE FOR BASEBALL: The rich get richer with these additions...So while Mizzou should reap some recruiting advantages by moving to the league's best conference, this move is a net loss for it...

PRESEASON SEASON

Only 3 days until the end of the Pre-Season Season

20 Mondays - No. 1 (College Baseball Today)
Check out Eric Sorenson's first "Baldcast" video of the season. He talks about the new RPI formula that rewards wins on the road.
♦ More Eric Sorenson in College Baseball's Preseason Top 25 for 2013 (Athlon Sports)

♦ And the absurdity begins, before a single game has even been played: 2013 NCAA Baseball Preseason Regional Projections (College Baseball Daily)
The season hasn’t kicked off yet but it is time to start looking at how a potential 64 team bracket would look right now based on our preseason expectations of each conference. The last two years, we have hit on 20 out of 31 hosts (ASU appeal is the outlier). Remember, that these are just based on our projections and expectations for what we will happen come May 27th. We will release our new projections every Tuesday until the end of the season.
And, don't even ask where Mizzou fits in on the bracket.

JERSEY NUMBERS

♦ Thanks to MU Journalism grad and CNN photojournalist Jeremy Harlan for providing me with some jersey numbers from the early 90's, which I've updated on our historical list of Mizzou Baseball Jersey Numbers. Anyone else who has some jersey numbers to add to our list, let me know at simmonsfield@hotmail.com.

HI NOTES: New Jerseys, New Jersey Numbers, New Players

JERSEY NUMBERS

In case you missed, we've updated our list of historical Mizzou Baseball Jersey Numbers, based on the roster published in the 2013 Media Guide.  Some of the numbers in that new Media Guide roster look a little fishy (includes some duplicates), but we'll make corrections on our list as the season rolls out and the jerseys sort out.

And in case you missed it, the 2013 Media Guide is now available in PDF format at mutigers.comhttp://www.mutigers.com/sports/m-basebl/miss-m-basebl-body.html

PRESEASON SEASON

Missouri lineup far from finalized as baseball opener approaches (KBIA Sports Extra)
“We’re going with an ‘aces’ mindset, where it doesn’t matter if you’re pitching on Friday, Saturday or Sunday – when you’re out there, you’re the ace,” Zastryzny said.
. . .
A total of six players – in Scott Sommerfeld, Dane Opel, Brannon Champagne, Sal Belfonte, Logan Pearson and Case Munson – could all see time in the outfield and have all logged numerous innings during preseason scrimmages. Freshman Sean Ullrich, who also holds the potential of earning some time, could increase that number to seven...

SEC Fan's Guide to Mizzou Baseball: You Might Be a Long Time MU Baseball Fan if . . .

Simmons Field pre-Taylor Stadium
You might be a long-time Mizzou Baseball fan if . . .
  1. You see jersey number 41 on the field and the first name you think of is first baseman Cody Ehlers, not pitcher John Miles.
  2. You show up for a game at Taylor Stadium with the temperature in the 80s and you layered up and  brought an extra jacket
  3. You saw Tiger Baseball games coached by Gene McArtor.  Extra points if you saw John Hi Simmons coach.
  4. You remember Phil Bradley as a hot-hitting outfielder more than as a league-leading quarterback.
  5. You've ever been nervous walking up the rickety stairs to the old pre-Taylor Stadium press box
  6. You've watched a game from under the grandstand during a rain shower
  7. You have listened to someone other than Tex Little do play-by-play of Tiger Baseball on the radio.
  8. You remember when Pietroburgo was a pitcher who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners, not a catcher who became a Mizzou assistant coach
  9. You were a fan of Big 8 baseball.  Extra points if you were a Big 7 or even Big 6 fan.
SEC Baseball Fan's Guide to
Mizzou Baseball
You might be a Mizzou Baseball newbie if .. .
  1. You show up at a game when the temperature is in the upper 60s, wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and are surprised how cold it is.
  2. You park in the middle of the main parking lot so you'll be close to the gate, and then come out to see a baseball-sized hole through the windshield.  Of the car next to yours.  You hope.
  3. You ask, "Who's that guy yelling, Let's Go Mizzou!  Let's Go Mizzou!?"
  4. You believe the Event Staff when they tell you the lower section is only for reserved seat season ticket holders
  5. You're surprised when the Event Staff won't let you take in the sodas you stashed in your bag.  And you haven't learned the tricks for getting them in anyway.
  6. The attendance is over 2,000 and you wonder why the crowd is so small.
  7. You don't get excited when the Tigers beat a bad Kansas Jayhawks team.
  8. The numbers 195415, 33 and 34 mean nothing to you.
  9. You're surprised at how much fun you can have at Simmons Field.

Tim Hawkins: Former MU Tiger a Big Hit in Comedy

One of the recent additions to our list of MU Jersey Numbers is #25, Tim Hawkins.

Hawkins played Outfield for the Tigers from 1988-89, leading the 1989 Tigers in many categories and earning several awards:
  • Batting average (.372)
  • Hits (83)
  • Doubles (16)
  • Triples (8)
  • RBI (59)
  • At-bats (223)
  • All District IV
  • All Big 8
  • All Big 8 Tournament
He is tied for third for all-time MU single season triples (tied at 8 with his teammate, Dave Silvestri), is tied at #6 in career triples (11), and is #7 in Career Slugging Percentage (.562).

Hawkins' bio at TimHawkins.net refers only briefly to his baseball days, focusing more on the career path he has followed in the years since:
A former All-American baseball player, he traded the sports stage for the comedy stage and never looked back. The St. Louis native taught himself to play guitar and tested the waters at area comedy clubs. But he determined early in his career that he did not want to focus on the comedy club circuit alone. “People love stand-up, but many choose not to go to comedy clubs. So we’ve gone underground, even counter-culture in a way. And it’s a blast.”
I had heard of Tim Hawkins, the comedian, and watched a number of his videos online. I had also heard of Tim Hawkins the Mizzou Baseball player (his time at Mizzou ended just before I began following the team).

But I never made the connection that they are one and the same until a teammate supplied his jersey number and mentioned he is a comedian ("He said the first time I met him I spit on his shoe. That is why I’m afraid to show up at one of his shows. I have a feeling I might be a part of the act.").

Here's one of my favorite YouTube clips of Tim Hawkins' comedy. There are a lot more on YouTube and at TimHawkins.net.

More Jersey Numbers

I've updated our list of MU Jersey Numbers and the players who wore them, based on some e-mails. I was glad especially to add another Tiger who went on to a career in the Major Leagues.
