Four Missouri pitchers combined to allow only two runs and seven hits in a 4-2 Tigers victory over Cal State-Bakersfield on Saturday evening at Taylor Stadium.
■ Big 12 standings with one day left:
Texas 17-9-1 (.648)
Oklahoma 16-10 (.615)
Kansas State 14-10-1 (.604)
Missouri 16-11 (.593)
Texas A&M 14-12 (.538)
Texas Tech 12-14 (.462)
Baylor (10-15 (.400)
Oklahoma State 8-16 (.333)
Nebraska 7-19 (.269)
Scenarios and possibilities:
If OU loses Sunday, OU and MU are tied, with tie-breaker to OU due to head-to-head series win - so MU cannot rise past OU
If KSU loses to KU on Sunday, the Wildcats will drop to 4th and MU will finish 3rd.
If KSU wins, the Wildcats secure 3rd place.
Even if Texas A&M wins, they cannot rise above MU, so the Tigers can finish no worse than 4th.
So, who do we root for Sunday? I can't bring myself to say the answer to that, so I'll just say Root for the Tigers!
■ And at that other ballfield just to the west: Tigers advance to Regional championship (Missourian):
“Last night just didn’t feel right,” Tigers coach Ehren Earleywine said. “Maybe God sent the storm in for us so we could get up today and start all over again.”
When the game picked up Saturday, the Tigers put the momentum back in their favor. Thomas settled down, holding the Fighting Illini to only four hits the rest of the way, and she did not allow another run.
“I think it was the No. 1 most important factor, to stop that first inning rush and start afresh,” Earleywine said.
