Through four batters Tuesday, Blake Brown had recorded two strikeouts and blasted a home run. Brown and his Normal West High School baseball teammates were only getting started.
The Wildcats pounded out 16 hits in four turns at bat, and Brown added a second home run to his winning performance on the mound as West claimed an 11-1 Big 12 Conference victory over Bloomington.
“I’m glad I could step into the (pitching) role and do a pretty good job,” said Brown, recruited by Missouri as an outfielder. “Today was definitely my best start of the year. I felt really comfortable on the mound.”
Brown struck out six and walked two in five innings as West improved to 23-4 and 8-1 in the Big 12.
“I’ve never gone that long in a game so the last inning was a little bit of a struggle,” Brown said. “(Catcher) Cody (Kinser) did well helping me out, and the defense did a really good job. It was a really tough day for fly balls with the wind, and they came through for me.”
