Tigers Sweep K-State Series, Play at Colorado Today

Bengals Could Take Lead by Beating Buffs(Columbia Daily Tribune, Monday May 10, 1954)

BOULDER, Colo. -- The Missouri Tigers and Colorado Buffs cast their eyes on first place in the Big Seven baseball standings as they opened a two-game conference series here today.

The Buffs and Bengals remained in a tie for second place as the Tigers swept a series at Kansas State Saturday, winning the finale, 10-5, while the Coloradoans were manhandling Kansas, 14-3.

That left the two teams just a half game behind the front-running Oklahoma Sooners who open a six-game road trip at Kansas State today. Should the Sooners lose to the Wildcats, either the Tigers or the Buffs will vault into first place.

The Tigers had an easier time of it in Saturday's game than they did the previous day when they were forced to go 11 innings to clip the Wildcats, 5-3. Ed Cook coasted to his second victory of the year although he needed help from Gene Gastineau.

The Bengals jumped off to a 4-0 lead in the third on a pair of walks and singles by Dick Dickinson, Bob Musgrave, Jerry Schoonmaker and George Gleason. They added another in the fourth on a walk, a sacrifice, and an error, and made it 7-0 in the fifth. Musgrave singled, went to third when Catcher Dick Meyers threw wild on a pick-off attempt, and scored on Gleason's double to left. Buddy Cox grounded a single past third to score Gleason.

The Wildcats routed Cook with a three-run outburst in the sixth on two singles, a double, a walk and Todd Sickel's error, but Gastineau came in to retire the side.

Missouri added another in the seventh and a pair in the ninth and the Wildcats got to Gastineau for two in their ninth on two singles, a walk, a wild pitch and an error by Cox.

All conference teams will see action this week in a busy schedule:
