Tigers Rout Colorado, 11-1, for Fifth Straight Victory

J. Schoonmaker Wallops Two Home Runs(Columbia Daily Tribune, Wednesday May 12, 1954)

The Big Seven baseball scramble loomed as a two-team race today as the Missouri Tigers rolled toward home from Boulder, Colo., where they completed a sweep of a two-game series with the Colorado Buffs yesterday, 11-2.

While the second place Tigers were posting their fifth straight conference win and a perfect record for their four-game trip, the league-leading Oklahoma Sooners were shellacking Kansas State at Manhattan, 11-4. That left the Sooners less than a half-game ahead of the Tigers and set the stage for a series between the two clubs here this Friday and Saturday.

Oklahoma, however, plays at Kansas today and tomorrow and thus could stretch its lead over Missouri to a full game by winning both contests. Should the Jayhawks defeat the Sooners today, the Tigers would take over first place.

Jerry Schoonmaker was the hitting star for Missouri yesterday as he blasted out two home runs and two singles in four trips to the plate and drove in five runs. The homers were the fifth and sixth of the season for the Tiger centerfielder.

Bert Beckmann, used only in relief until last week, became the second Bengal hurler to go the route as he spaced six Buffs hits in posting his second victory.

After the Tigers scored a single run in the first inning on a hit batsman and single by Todd Sickel and George Gleason, they exploded for four more in the fourth.

Successive singles by Sickel, Bob Musgrave and Schoonmaker produced the first marker and Musgrave scored when Catcher Gene Taylor threw wild on an attempted double-steal. Gleason drew a walk and stole second with Schoonmaker counting on another wild heave by Taylor. Herb Morgan grounded to short, but Jim Nylund's throw to the plate was too late to nail Gleason. Buddy Cox then fanned, Jim Doerr grounded out and Beckmann popped out to end the inning.

An error, two stolen bases, and two singles produced two more Missouri runs in the fourth and Schoonmaker’s first homer with Musgrave on base made it 9-0 in the sixth.

Frank Bernardi led off with a wallop over the left field fence in the sixth to give the Buffs their first tally, and an error, walk and Jerry Keith’s single added another in the seventh.

Musgrave walked in the Tiger eighth and Schoonmaker followed with his second round-tripper to wind up the Missouri scoring.

Colorado drops seven sports, faces possible penalties
(Columbia Daily Tribune, June 12, 1980)

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - The University of Colorado athletic department is in serious trouble - financially and morally.

The school's Board of Regents yesterday slashed seven minor sports from the program to help balance the beleaguered budget, which is expected to incur a deficit of $970,000 in the coming school year. Then, the board forwarded a report to the National Collegiate Athletic Association that found CU to be in violation of 50 NCAA rules since 1972.

Sports axed from the Buffaloes' athletic program include men's baseball, wrestling, swimming and gymnastics and women's swimming, diving and gymnastics - all non-revenue-producing sports. Elimination of these sports, said university President Arnold Weber, would save $360,000 annually and still maintain CU's eligibility in the Big Eight Conference and Divison I of the NCAA.

Weber cited three principal causes for the deficit: reduced public and student support for CU athletics, additional athletic department financial obligations for the new Events Conference Center debt service and for compliance with Title IX, and lack of managerial controls.
