The 20 year old RH is still very projectable and was throwing 93 on a very cold baseball day (38 degrees) the day I saw him pitch. His fastball lacked the movement you would want with a power pitcher and he complimented it with a 83-84 mph slider. He did not throw a change the day I saw him but I am told he has a serviceable one.■ Soptic signs with Missouri Tigers (jcc.edu, 12/1/10)
Jeff Soptic, a hard throwing right-handed pitcher for the Johnson County Community College baseball team, has signed a national letter-of-intent with the University of Missouri. Soptic, formerly of Shawnee Mission East, chose the Tigers over several other top colleges in the country.
Soptic is projected to be the ace of the Cavaliers 2011 pitching staff. As a freshman, he posted an impressive 5-2 record with 48 strikeouts in 42 innings on the hill. He made 13 starts, which was second highest on the team.
“Jeff is one of the top pitchers in the country, and watching him mature as a pitcher has really been fun,” said head coach Kent Shelley. “He struggled a little after we overhauled his mechanics, but he’s now comfortable after the adjustment. It is great to see all his hard work pay off, and he will be a good pitcher in the Big 12.”
Soptic was recently ranked as the 20th best prospect in the country by Perfect Game USA, baseball’s largest and most comprehensive scouting service. The Kansas City Royals drafted Soptic out of his school in the 43rd round.
