The University of Missouri baseball team, with a six-won and two-lost non-league record, opens its Big Seven conference campaign here Monday afternoon with the first of two games with the Iowa State Cyclones.
Coach John Simmons will send Right-hander Emil Kammer, his best pitcher to date, against the Cyclones on Monday, and follow with Southpaw Ed Cook on Tuesday. Kammer, a reformed third baseman, has won two games, lost none, and boasts an earned run average of 1.89. Cook's record is one victory and one defeat.
The rest of the Tiger lineup will find George Gleason behind the plate, Bob Schoonmaker at first base, Buddy Cox at second, Dick Dickinson at short, Todd Sickel at third, Bob Musgrave in right field, Jerry Schoonmaker in center and either Kent Henson or Jim Doerr in left.
The Cyclones, who lost to Kansas, 6-1, in their conference opener, have an overall 3-3 record. Coach Capp Timm rates his infield of Al Machmer at first, Bob Taylor at second, Dick Severson at short and Ray George at third as the best Cyclone inner defense of all time.
Missouri batting averages for the first eight games find George Gleason topping the list with .387, followed by Jerry Schoonmaker at .355, and Dickinson and Musgrave each with .333 makrs. Jerry Schoonmaker leads in runs batted in with 13 and homers with three. The Tigers are hitting .270 as a team.
