Tiger Open First-Place Battle With Sooners

Kammer to Pitch Opener For Missouri
(Columbia Daily Tribune, Thursday May 13, 1954)

A battle for first place in the Big Seven conference baseball race starts at Rollins field tomorrow afternoon when the Missouri Tigers and the Oklahoma Sooners clash in the opener of a two-game series, at 3:10 o'clock.

The Sooners, leading the league with a 5-0 record after beating Kansas, 6-2, yesterday, hold a half-game edge over the Tigers and are scheduled to wind up their series with the Jayhawks at Lawrence today. A K.U. victory would send the Sooners to Columbia in a tie with the Bengals, who have won five and lost one. If Oklahoma wins, its margin would be increased to a full game and Missouri would have to sweep the series to take over the conference lead.

Right-hander Emil Kammer, who was credited with two of Missouri's four victories on their recent road swing, is Coach John Simmons' choice to face the Sooners tomorrow, with Lefty Ed Cook ready for relief duty. Bert Beckmann will start the second game of the series on Saturday, Simmons said.

Bob Schoonmaker, benched at his own request in Tuesday's game at Colorado, will be back at first base for the Sooner series, the Tiger mentor said. Schoonmaker, a .340 hitter in 1952, slumped to .278 last year and has a .222 mark in 13 games this season. Herb Morgan, his replacement at Colorado, singled once in five trips to the plate and drove in a run.

Simmons also plans to stick with Jim Doerr as his left fielder after experimenting with Dick Adler, Lloyd Allen, Sam Sayers, Kent Henson and Jack Gabler in various outfield combinations.

The Tigers, returning by bus from Colorado yesterday, got an advance look at the Sooners when they stopped off in Lawrence to watch the late innings of their game with Kansas.

After the Oklahoma series, the Nebraska Cornhuskers move in for two games on Monday and Tuesday, which will wind up the Bengals' home schedule. They'll close the season at Iowa State next Friday and Saturday.

Outfielder Jerry Schoonmaker pounded the ball at a blistering pace during the Missouri Tigers' recent four-game trip and took over leadership in six departments. Clubbing Colorado's pitchers for eight hits in 10 trips, Jerry upped his season's average to .404, leads in home runs with six, runs batted in with 26, total bases with 28, runs scored with 19 and hits with 26.
